Over the weekend the unprotected lists came out for all 30 NHL teams, and as expected fans absolutely lost their shit.
Pittsburgh was no different than any other teams their list came out Saturday to mixed emotions. But some fans still can’t wrap their head around the logistics of the draft rules. So let’s dive into this dumpster fire that is the 2017 Expansion Draft.
- Teams can protect Seven forwards, three defensive players and one goaltender.
- Teams can protect eight skaters and one goaltender.
- First and Second-year professionals and unsigned draft choices will be exempt from the selection
- Players with a no movement clause must be protected unless they agree to waive their clause.
The forwards the Penguins chose to protect is Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel, Partic Hornqvist. As for the Defensemen Kris Letang, Justin Shultz, Brian Doumolen, and Oli matta. Goaltender, Matt Murray
Now some of the notable players left off this list are Hagelin, Bonino, Kunitz and obviously Fleury. Bonino and Kunitz are free agents this season, GM Jim Rutherford was reported to tell free agent players to go out and see what kind of deal they can strike up then see if the pens can counter. Obviously, the Pens and fans of the Penguins would love to see most of these guys return for a third run at the cup, but that isn’t always possible.
Alright, now it’s time to talk about the big French-Canadian elephant in the room, three-time Stanley Cup Champion Marc-Andre Fleury. What else is left to say about this guy? The answer, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! this guy is a first ballot Pittsburgh legend. The end is finally here fo the “Flower” and it is bittersweet. On one hand, we have a great up and coming goalie in Matt Murray who has already won two cups as a rookie. On the other hand, we are losing the pulse of the locker room a guy who has lead us to three cup runs, and one of the most loved penguins to ever step on the ice in Pittsburgh.
Fleury most likely will go to Vegas and most likely be their starter, Which is great for Flower he needs to be a starter he is too talented to split time or be a backup. Yeah, sometimes he makes you (pens fans) want to jump through your TV screen and strangle him for some stupid way he decides to play a puck, but for the most part, he is an absolute stud in net. I think Fleury will do great in Vegas, three-time Stanley Cup Champ, a guy who loves the game and is still one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. Does he have his flaws, yes does he decide to skate out to center ice to clear a puck way too much, yes, but the man is a Hall of Famer in my eyes Vegas would be out of their mind not the take flower on Wednesday.
And I don’t know if I’m the only one who has this take but does Fleury not have the facial hair of a struggling Vegas magician?
So the good news is if the NHL doesn’t work out “Marc the Magnificent” will be in the perfect city to start his new career.
SPECULATION: For his first trick he will make Matt Murray Disappear…
So sit tight and watch as the NHL expansion draft goes off without a hitch… That’s a joke it’s the NHL they will find a way to screw this up like I don’t know doing it the same time they do the NHL awards. Already off to a grant start!
